Food for Stress Relief

*Summary:-

Food plays a crucial role in nutrition and keeping the mind in its healthiest state. New research suggests that high-fat, high-carbohydrate comfort foods fight stress by preventing the tide of stress-related hormones that are released when people are acutely exposed to stress.

In the study, which appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers investigated the effects of comfort foods on stressed-out rats.

They found that when rats exposed to stress ate foods high in carbohydrates and fat, an unknown component in the foods acted like a brake on the stream of stress-related hormones, such as the steroid cortisol, and hormones that are related to the "fight or flight" syndrome.

In this blog, I will glimpse what is stress relief food, what is comfort food, how it helps to reduce stress, what stress food to prevent, which food causes stress, and why stress causes people to overeat.

So if you like a summary and takeaway of this blog, then read it carefully.

If you’re trying to reduce your stress levels, you maybe already know to start with the basics like self-care, sleep management, and exercise. But did you know there are some foods that lower stress levels, too?

Cortisol is also known as the “Stress hormone” because your adrenal gland releases it when you’re in a stressful situation, or when your body is under physical stress like inflammation. It’s the key to helping your body organize its fight-or-flight instinct, and it exists a good thing. Managing stress is the number one treatment for lowering cortisol levels.

The best way to reduce cortisol in the body is to focus on an anti-inflammatory diet, which means fewer processed foods and more whole foods. Stress management through food is a long game, not a get-relaxed-quick trick. If you’re wishing to reduce stress, keep in mind this one key piece of advice 'Don’t skip meals.

Eating on a regular schedule every three to five hours will help balance your blood sugar levels. Being in a chronic state of low blood sugar is stressful on your body and can increase cortisol, so maintaining a balanced blood sugar can go a long way.

If you have a healthy diet but you’re still incredibly stressed and not sleeping enough, you won’t see the results you’re looking for with food alone but when it comes to our health, nutrition is the one thing that we can control.

* Food that increases stress:-

Low-nutrient, high-calorie foods increase stress in a couple of ways.

The scarcity of nutrients means your body does not have what it needs to keep itself running smoothly, plus unhealthy food usually contains substances that cause additional problems, which your body has to manage.

1. Added sugar and refined carbohydrates

This includes cookies, cakes, and sugary drinks, as well as carbs like white bread and pasta. These foods cause stress because they lead to rapid increases in blood sugar levels, which your body must regulate. When your blood sugar boosts, your body has to make insulin to bring it back down again, you will go through a crashing interval, and the up and down has a domino effect on other hormones in your body.

2. Caffeine:-

Caffeine affects stress in two ways. It can oversee overstimulation of our body's natural stress response, and it can disrupt sleep.

3. Fried foods:-

Fast foods or other foods high in trans fats indirectly influence stress in your body because they cause inflammation. They also create extra work for your body.

These types of fats are harder to break down, so they’re not the kinds of food that your body can instantly use for fuel, your body will strive to stock them and that expects a little bit of additional work.

* Why stress causes people to overeat:-

Cortisol boosts appetite and may also ramp up courage in common, including the motivation to eat. Once a stressful incident is over, cortisol levels should fall, but if the stress doesn't go away or if a person's stress response gets stuck in the "on" position cortisol may stay high.

* What is comfort food:-

* Why Is It So Comforting?

Foods that are high in carbs, sugar, and fatty acids stimulate the brain's reward system, which is why it’s comforting.

*Balance Diet Is Key*

One of the simplest ways to keep your cravings at bay is by maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. If you’re getting all the healthy fats, carbs, and sugars your body needs, those cravings will be less common.
